An interview with Aster about their newest single "Lonely Hearts". . .
London Penny: How did you get started as a band?
Aster: Aster started off as a studio band. Former member Austin and Justin started it when Austin was stationed in Alaska for the army. That was 2018 or 2019 I [Justin] can't remember the exact time. We got a nine song LP out in 2020. That was around the time Austin came back, and we formed a band around us. From there we opened for bands like Oceano, Sleep Signals and The Browning. We even had a headlining show.
Aster took a year or so hiatus, but Justin and Mickey (drummer) found other great musicians to bring Aster back: Aiden (lead guitar) Wyatt (Guitar) Chris (bass)
LP: Who are you influenced by?
Aster: Our influences are all over the place: Justin gets inspiration from bands like A Day To Remember, Asking Alexandria and The Amity Affliction while Wyatt likes dad rock like Nickleback, Creed and Breaking Benjamin. Chris likes the old school stuff like Metallica and Megadeth, also into a little Blink-182 and Green Day (Aren't we all?). Mickey is a huge fan of Linkin Park, Korn, Pantera. Aiden loves anything metalcore from 2007 to 2015. Plus huge 80s influence into his playing like Motley Crue and Def Leppard.
LP: Tell me about the single “Lonely Hearts.” Whats the story behind it? What was the writing / recording process like?
Aster: "Lonely Hearts" touches on depression. It talks about getting inside your head and thinking no one wants you around, and the best thing for you is to drink it all away or to end it. But in reality, what you really are doing is screaming for help from a friend or family member.
The recording process was fun. We went to Bret Liber in KC at Redroof Productions and had a different song. That's when we took it to a producer in LA band Kevin McCombs and he helped shape it into what it is today. We then sent it to Erik Ron to be the Mix Master on it. They both did amazing working.
For the video we went with ARC Media LLC. Audrey does amazing work and really helped bring our story to life!
