Sentimental Creatures, based out of St. Joseph, MO, released their debut single ‘Down - Live At The Rino 8.19.24’ on September 9.
The band is composed of Lukas Allnutt (vocals), Isaiah Diaz (lead guitar), and Sara Verduzco (drums). Lukas and Isaiah first met in 2017 at Muddy River Guitars at an open mic:
“We’ve been brothers ever since,” Lukas said. “It’s wild how many different things we’ve been through over the years as far as life goes, but also with different projects that fell through, or even at one point, the main bridge that we used to travel to hang out on was unusable due to flooding. But we never gave up.”
In 2023, Lukas and Isaiah played their first live show together at the Lake Contrary “Save the Lake!” festival.
“It was such an amazing time and afterwards we were even more motivated to push ourselves to find the missing piece we needed to keep going. Eventually we found our way into our first time playing Sk8bar together but instead of going as just ‘Lukas and Isaiah’ like we had previously we donned the name “Sentimental Creatures” for the first time. And that show was life changing: the positivity, the kindness, and just the collective energy of the room was incredible. And it’s also where we met Sara!” Lukas said.
“The first time I met Luke and Isaiah was at Sk8bar, back when it was in St. Joe,” Sara said. “One conversation from that night about music and what we love about it brought us to eventually meeting up and just jamming, and we just haven’t stopped doing that.”
Sentimental Creatures’ influences include classic rock legends like Stevie Ray Vaughan, Black Sabbath, David Bowie and Prince, as well as 90s bands like Dave Matthews and The Smashing Pumpkins.
In regard to their live atmosphere, Isaiah describes that the shows can be “unpredictable and random. We never really know what’s gonna happen until the set starts.”
The band’s debut single was recorded at The Rino in North Kansas City.
“This single was special because it was the first time we’ve ever recorded live - with an awesome producer Riley Corbin - but also because we had been wanting to play at The Rino for a really long time, and this was our first time there,” Lukas said. “It was so much fun and there were so many incredible people there; it really was a magical night.”
Musically, ‘Down’ starts off gentle with an acoustic guitar, but it’s still a driving song. It’s reminiscent of somewhere between the ‘60s, ‘90s and modern. There’s a melting pot of nostalgia and the present. The lyrics are emotive, full of desperation. The contrast with the instrumental being soft percussion and acoustic bring to mind early Bob Dylan-esque vibes and Jeff Buckley.
“It’s always been a special song to me, and it was one of the first ones I felt like we really bonded over as a band,” Lukas said.
