Simul Astra just released their debut single “Permanent Problems” on May 17. This song is heavy-hitting - fast paced with a fury of pure punk energy.

I spoke with Teriq Newton, the founder and brain behind Simul Astra, about the single:

LP: What are some goals you have for the upcoming year?

Simul Astra: Our debut single “Permanent Problems” is out now on all platforms, that was a big one. We’re releasing our debut EP ‘Permanent Problems, Temporary Solutions’ with a show at Lemonade Park on August 22nd. Hopefully we’ll have physical releases for that show, either on vinyl or cassette.

One thing that is very important to me at this point in my career is recording more music, although I do love playing live shows. Sometimes I get distracted by that part of the experience and have to get back in the studio. Time really flies when you’re on stage. . .

There will be a Linktree in all of our social media bios that will explain how to use qBitorrent to legally download our music, if you’re a tech savvy of Simul Astra I’d like to reward that and spread the good news of qBittorent.

I’ve been using qBittorent for years now. Bands like Radiohead have tried this in the past, but I really think it’s the most pure way for me to give my art directly to anyone who wants it, for free, and they can keep it forever. There’s full lyrics, artwork, and the song in .flac, .wav, .aif, and .mp3. It will always be seeded. I think of it as an intersection between the DIY music scene and the P2P community.

LP: What was the writing and recording process like?

Simul Astra: We recorded with Joel Nanos at Element Recording Studio. I worked with Joel on some Scruffy & The Janitors songs in the past and really enjoyed the process. Joel has done a lot of rock records that I am a huge fan of - it sort of just made sense.

We go back into the studio with Joel to record our EP this month.

Anthony and Casey really brought the songs to life and gave them a lot of attitude. I couldn’t ask for a better rhythm section; they’re professionals in every sense of the word.

LP: Do you have any rituals before you go on stage?

Simul Astra: Making sure I have water for the stage! I’ve never cared so much about my voice in my life.
