St. Joseph-based band Almost Enemies releases their first single of the year “Isolation”.
“Isolation” was released on November 12. The band’s last release was their debut EP Circles, released in September of last year.
Almost Enemies’ follow-up single takes some strengths from their EP, and the band propels forward with their alternative punk-rock sound of aggressive guitar, driving bass, vibrant drums, and emotion-riddled lyrics.
Almost Enemies wrote the song about quarantine in 2020. “We wanted to write a song that everyone could relate to,” the band says.
Since quarantine was often a lonely, isolating, and confusing time, this anthem of a single captures those emotions well. In a way, it shows that even distressing times can create great music.
The track opens with lyrics about missing spending time with and laughing with friends. These subjects may seem mundane in everyday life, but I think that Almost Enemies picked these specific activities because a lot of small things were taken for granted and had to be on hold during Covid and quarantine. Even the little things can be appreciated to a greater degree now. The lyrics progress to describe how isolation created frustration and a lot of uncertainty. The track concludes by repeating the first verse, bringing a nice ‘finished’ feel.
“Isolation” will be on Almost Enemies’ upcoming album, which they are currently in the process of writing and recording. Almost Enemies hopes to have the album released sometime in early 2023.
