An Interview with Corners of the Sky

LP: How did the band start?

Corners of the Sky: We started as a sizable group of friends, jamming on JCCC's campus and their band room between and after classes.

LP: What are the origins of the band name?

Corners of the Sky: Jason started a band with a friend in high school. Immediately thinking of names for the group, they landed on "Pillars of the Sky" or "Corners of the Sky". The band didn't end up forming, however; but a year or so later he asked said friend if he could use the name for his new group.

LP: How did everyone join the band?

Corners of the Sky: It formed after Jason narrowed down a few people who stuck around the jams. Ravi (rhythm guitar) and Jake (bass). Jason mentioned his intent to start a group, a topic brought up more or less by Ravi. A few days later, Jason popped the question to Jake after a day trip to the city. Finding a drummer took a while, especially with many contenders unable to keep up. Kyle (drums) found a post by KC Musicians advertising our dilemma, nigh happenstance. He stuck with us and we were set!

LP: Who are your influences?

Corners of the Sky: King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Thee Oh Sees, Frankie and the Witch Fingers.

LP: Tell me about “The Oracle.” How did the song come to be?

Corners of the Sky: Like many of Jason's original songs, "The Oracle" was written in his room! He spent time in his late high school days writing lyrics and putting different riffs together.

LP: What are some of your favorite memories as a band?

Corners of the Sky: "Grandma's Psychedelic Barndidium Jam," a DIY festival in Tonganoxie. Stacked bill with all of our friends out in the majestic heartland fields. Also, Josey Records (KC) -- possibly our best show to date -- was a fun one. It was at this point we were practicing and gathering usable takes for recording, getting our songs more locked in. You tend to feel more comfortable in the DIY-ish environments, and where most DIYs fail in organizational aspects (or being shut down for noise complaints) Josey Records' new basement venue succeeds. We've had shows at Replay Lounge and Bottleneck (Lawrence) with friends and touring acts.

LP: Describe the band in your own words.

Corners of the Sky: Energetic, psychedelic, rock.

LP: What are you plans for 2024?

Corners of the Sky: We have a few more singles ready to go, hoping to get a music video for one of those. We are also currently recording a 6-song EP in our new space in Lawrence. Fans of the live shows will recognize them! Quite a lot to pack on for the next few months, but we know we can do it.
