An Interview with Oskorp

Updated: 3 days ago

Oskorp is a Midwestern metalcore band from St. Joesph, MO. As of date, the band has released two singles: their debut “Firebender” was released on September 9, and “Back to Formula” was released on October 7.

Oskorp’s next show will be at Sk8bar in Kansas City on December 14 with Thousand Years Wide, Caleb Chronic, and Blvcklight.

LP: How did the band get started? Who’s in the band and what do you play?

Oskorp: We had gone through some name and line up changes before finally coming together this last April. We were moving away from our name as Grifter when we met our vocalist at a metal jam night at Vivo in Overland Park at the time.

We are currently a 5-piece with Jordan on vocals, Lakota and Quentin on guitars, Keenan on bass and Sam on drums. We all do a bit of back up vocals too!

LP: What’s the origins behind the band name?

Oskorp: We just have an affinity for Sam Raimi Spider-man - Oscorp (Technolgies)/OsKorp was just perfect for us; the campiness, the memes, and green goblin is just fantastic.

LP: Who are your influences?

Oskorp: We are influenced by a lot of different sounds. Vocally, we pull a lot from suicide silence/chelsea grin early MySpace era.

Slipknot, Korn, Lamb of God and Thy Art Is Murder are huge for us instrumentally, as well as guys like Knocked Loose who are out in the scene killing it right now. We just love writing music that grooves and throws down.

LP: Tell me about your singles “Firebender” and “Back to Formula.”

Oskorp: “Firebender” is always a band favorite; it sounds sinister from the opening guitar tones. Lyrically, it follows zuko from “Avatar the Last Airbender,” but it’s really just about finding your own path in life and the journey and choices that comes with it.

“Back to Formula” is one of the first songs we really got down as a band. We like to open shows with it because of how the energy is upfront on it. That song is about how hard the human experience can be: it’s easy to focus on bad things, it’s easy to see meaninglessness in daily routine; there are no new problems under the sun; they’ve been there since always. And that’s beautiful. There’s a book on connection to be written in there somewhere!

LP: What’s next for you as a band?

Oskorp: Right now, we are looking to really elevate the shows we are booking going forward. Not just taking every opportunity but taking opportunities to grow and help the music scene as a whole. We are thinking big picture stuff and want to see how far we can take this band!

We will be releasing the rest of our EP here later this fall. We’re excited to get more music out!
