LP: How and when did the band start? What’s the origins behind the band name?
SJ: We got together around July 2023. It really started as a few people trying to play some music through a creative outlet. Turns out the music we started making wasn’t completely trash, so we wanted to share it out with the world. There are a couple cinema buffs in the band… [SPACE] Jockey is a reference to Alien.
LP: Who’s in the band, and how did you join?
SJ: A few of us (Chris and Kevin) have been playing together for years and were in a previous band together. After that project was dead and buried, we kept playing and writing… and eventually sweet-talked Coffey into joining on vocals. We had a few songs together between us, but needed a bassist. That’s when Matt came in - Chris knew him through his wife. And it’s been history since then.
LP: Who are your influences?
SJ: This is a really hard question to answer as a band as it’s extremely individualistic, and it’s also why we have a unique sound. We all come from pretty different backgrounds:
Chris: blink-182, Box Car Racer, Smashing Pumpkins.
Coffey: Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne, the 2005 film Constantine, Perdido Street Station… Thom Yorke and Brandon Boyd taught me how to sing. James Muñoz taught me how to scream.
Kevin: Mastodon, Korn, Alice In Chains, Against Me!, NOFX… my kick pedal tendencies come from punk, the odd time signatures and polyrhythms in some of the songs are from progressive metal, and the groove comes from grunge and nu metal.
Matt: Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Royal Blood. I take a lot of influence from spending time in concert/marching band from when I was younger. You’ll hear sort of a variation of a common Latin rhythm called Son Clave in my bass lines in multiple songs that definitely comes from my old band days. I also spent time playing acoustic folk covers with my wife. Spending time learning and playing these covers definitely changed how I thought about the songwriting process in general, considering how stripped-down songs are with just an acoustic guitar and a vocalist.
LP: Tell me about the singles you’ve released this year.
SJ: We have released 4 this year:
“The Well” - one of the only songs that started from lyrics first, and we built the instrumental around it.
“Treading Glass” - an early song from the band. It’s a heavy hitter… it’s a favorite for us to play live. It has a ton of energy.
“Terminal Boredom” - really rhythm-section forward song; our bassist Matt says you have to listen until the end.
“Modern Comforts” - This lends itself nicely into a topic we would love to talk about… It’s actually the title track for our upcoming album.
LP: Tell me about the upcoming album.
SJ: November 8th! Mark your calendars. Our debut album, Modern Comforts. It’s 10 tracks: we think it’s all killer, no filler, but you can be the judge. But more importantly, it’s earnest - which strangely feels punk rock nowadays.
