Stain on Society is: Deljon Riddle on guitar and backing vocals, Chris Goodwin on bass and backing vocals, Travis Woods on drums, and Josh Kincaid on guitars and vocals. The band released an EP in 2022 with an earlier lineup; currently, they are working on writing and recording new tracks.
LP: How did the band get started / how did everyone join?
Chris: Josh and I started the band after replying to each other's Facebook post on a musicians page on Facebook.
Josh: Chris and I found each other on the KC Musicians FB page and started the band August 2022. It was just us and drum loops. Prior to this I had only been a vocalist in bands, and I actually didn't originally set out to be the vocalist in this band because I was looking to just play guitar for once, but I wrote and sang some lyrics for what is now the song "For What It's Worth" and Chris made the executive decision that I was going to sing. I didn't even know I could sing and play at the same time before this.
After that writing just took off. And those are the songs that have evolved into what you hear today.
Then November 2022 we brought in Deljon Riddle on guitar as he had known Chris previously from another band. We played our first show as a three-piece at the original SK8bar in St Joe using our drum loops.
In February 2023 we found Alex Mayer and he became our drummer. We parted ways with him December 2023 and then we found the missing piece with drummer Travis Woods March 2024 and have been going since.
Travis: I joined after answering an ad by Chris’s son and was asked to fill in for a couple of shows then later asked to join.
Deljon: I joined Chris and Josh for a celebration of life jam at Chris’ house; Chris and I played bass with the late John Caniglia; Chris was the original bass player, so when he left for out of state work, I was asked to join, having never played bass before but I rolled with it. With Chris’ persistence, I came over and jammed and switched to rhythm guitar.
LP: Who are your influences?
Travis: Vinnie Paul, Sean Kinney, Keith Moon, Bonzo.
Chris: Cajun music through my cousin Blaine and Grunge: Krist Novoselic (Nirvana) and Jeff Ament (Pearl Jam); punk including pretty much all old school punk.
Deljon: Jerry Garcia, Mike McCready, Omar Rodriguez Lopez, Frank Zappa, Larry LaLonde, Trey Anastasio; The Grateful Dead, The Mars Volta, Phish, 90s alternative and indie, Pavement.
Josh: James Hetfield (Metallica), Corey Taylor (Slipknot), Jonathan Davis (Korn), Jerry Cantrell (Alice In Chains), Jim Root (Slipknot), Wayne Static (Static-X), Shaun Morgan (Seether), Gavin Rossdale (Bush), Adam Jones (Tool).
LP: What are the origins/meaning behind the band name?
Chris: The band name comes from being a teenager in the 90s and constantly hearing "this generation is a stain on Society" and the S.O.S. initials worked as well as we felt that Society was in a state of S.O.S.
Josh: Building on that, I think our lyrics and music are a great representation of that as well. When you listen to it you feel the weight and trauma of society. And that's what we want you to do. We want you to feel...no matter what it is.
LP: What’s your typical live show like?
Chris: Our live shows are truly an experience.
Josh: Lots of energy! One of my favorite things to do is go out in the crowd. It's become part of our show, especially during our instrumental “Cocktale.” As Almost Famous put it: "I look for the one guy who isn't getting off and I make him get off."
LP: Describe the band in your own words.
Chris: We are a group of musicians that are all versed in different styles that just fit together. Like no matter what style you are into we have something that will appeal to you.
Josh: Really Loud Fucking Music. I have yet to find anyone who disagrees with that assessment.
LP: Plans for the rest of the year/a year from now as a band?
Joshua: We are going strong. We are finishing out the year with 4 more shows: 2 in November and 2 in December. We are going to write new material during the winter, and hopefully get some stuff recorded and released. There's also some amazing things happening that we aren't gonna talk about yet.
