On July 5, Lawrence, Kansas based musician Autumn Hayes released her single "Choices." Hayes drew the cover art herself as a drawing of her niece's eye.
The song scratches the same itch in my brain that classic folk-rock like Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young scratch.
"I'm influenced musically by the edgier, artistic new wave and grunge/alt rock from the 80s and 90s, mostly - The Cranberries and Siouxie Sioux, for example," Hayes told London Penny. "I've been told my voice has a similar lilt. My guitar playing is influenced by a lot of artists I grew up listening to, but I've heard people compare my playing to a country or folk sound the most."
"Choices" was recorded with Darrien Garrett of $cribblez and produced by Aubrey Zechariah Brown of LoopStation.
Hayes says, "I don't think there was ever a time I wasn't into music! I grew up listening to all sorts of music, mostly rock. I started playing guitar when I was around 12 years old, and I expanded my interests to include other stringed instruments like the ukulele, bass, and mandolin over time. I've always sung, but I had some voice lessons when I was about 16."
Outside of Hayes' solo music, she plays bass for Lonnie Fisher's band.
"As for bass, I take a lot of influence from Tina Weymouth, she's got a cool groove. Personally, I'm influenced by my family and close friends. There's lots of room to grow and I'm inspired to continue learning because of them."
Ultimately, Hayes says that she wants " people to be able to connect with my music on a deep personal level."
