Cade Polsgrove released his debut single “Killing Time” on Friday, November 1. The single is also the first release from Sad Cowboy Recording Co. based in Lawrence, Kansas.
The personnel behind the tracks consists of Polsgrove on guitar, lead vocals and harmonica; Matthew Mulnix on bass guitar; and Seth Stringham on drums.
The song is simultaneously fresh and retro: as discussed in the interview below, Polsgrove is inspired by 1950s rock ’n’ roll and blues from the 1980s and 1990s. Both share a shining influence on the track, and “Killing Time” builds interest for what is next from this young musician.
LP: Tell me about yourself as a musician. How did you get into music? Who are you influenced by?
Polsgrove: My name is Cade Polsgrove, and I started playing the guitar five years ago when I was 13 years old. My late older brother had been playing guitar off and on since he was little, and when he decided to get serious as a musician, that inspired me to follow in his footsteps. I also loved listening to music with my dad ever since I was young, and we would listen to a lot of classic country and classic rock in the truck together, but I would say my older brother definitely was my biggest inspiration with getting into music.
I do have a lot of other musical influences as well. I’ve always loved 50s rock and roll artists like Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly, but I also have a lot of influences from blues artists like Tab Benoit and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Classic country has also been a huge influence on my style, with artists like Hank Williams Junior and Waylon Jennings being some big inspirations of mine.
LP: Tell me about your single “Killing Time.” What was the songwriting & recording process like?
Polsgrove: I wrote my song “Killing Time” right after I graduated high school last June. I was kind of at a crossroads where I had no idea what I wanted to do as a career path besides music, so I sat down late one night at around midnight and just really explored what it felt like having all the uncertainty with my direction in life. It took me a few hours exploring different ideas to come up with all of my lyrics. After that, I went through different revisions of arrangements and stylistic choices. Overall, it took me around two or three days to finally have the finished product.
After I had finished writing my song, I had met a guy named Matthew Mulnix through a mutual friend, and I was invited to his house one afternoon in late June. We had a great time playing some music and getting to know each other, and he eventually told me that he and his friend Quinton Cox were working on opening up a studio together, and they wanted me to come in as one of their first clients to record a few of my original songs.
After they set up shop a couple months later in September, they had me come in and we spent a few hours recording five of my original songs, and I got my tracks back from Matthew a couple weeks later!
LP: What’s next for you as a musician?
Polsgrove: I’d say one of the next big steps for me is getting a solid band put together, and to continue sharpening my skills as a guitarist and a songwriter. Above all else though, music has always been my biggest passion in life, and, if I could be a positive influence to others through my music, I would say that would be my biggest goal with my music career!
