Corners of the Sky release Dingle “Psychedelic Cat/Wax”

Updated: Nov 2, 2024

Kansas City based psychedelic rock band Corners of the Sky released “Psychedelic Cat/Wax” on September 13. This dingle - as the band calls it, meaning ‘clever wordplay for double single’ - is a follow up to their single “The Oracle” and the live album “Live at the Dunes” released in January.

LP: Tell me about the single. What was the writing/recording process like?

CotS: Spontaneous. We recorded it at JCCC's free access (to students) studio. Our friend James Barnett, a fellow student and musician monitored the sessions and mixed them for us.

LP: What are the origins of the song title?

CotS: "Psychedelic," the word, it has a sort of rhythm to it. "Cat," Jason like cat... "Wax" works in a similar way in that it's a monosyllabic random word, with meaning attached to it later on in the writing process... Whole other can of worms.

LP: Does/how does your music evolve in a live setting? Ex: do you experiment and change stuff from the studio version?

CotS: All the time. Each song has a section written into it that is dedicated to improvisation, which we call "the jammy bit." No two takes were the same in recording, and no two performances are anywhere close to each other. We change up the key on occasion, tempo depending on the room.

LP: Do you have more music on the way for the rest of the year?

CotS: For the rest of the year, likely not. Our EP is mostly through with the recording process right now, it's just a matter of getting it right. We do have an idea to bridge the gap of inactivity with another live album, and live recordings from previous shows.
