Loop Station is a type of guitar pedal, but it is also the name of St. Joseph-based musician Aubrey Brown’s collaboration project. In a way, LoopStation is like a one-man band: all the instruments are played by Brown, with a featured guest from time to time.

In February, LoopStation posted a couple music videos on YouTube - “I’ll Be Fine!” and “Asking for a Change”.
“I’ll Be Fine!” was my introduction. The music video is subtitled ‘5 people & funky green screen shenanigans’ - which is exactly what you watch unfold. The miniature version of the band, of which all musicians are portrayed by Brown, except for the feature of guitarist Will Malita. The band plays on top of a table, while a cat sleeps before them. It makes for an amusing music video, as one by one the players go from being painted in bold singular colors to reality when a normal-sized Brown taps them. Musically, it is reminiscent of 90s/early 2000s pop-rock. I love that kind of music, so it should be no surprise that this single was instantly catchy for me. The guitar solo provided by Malita gives the song more of an edge, in a dazzling, purely epic solo. It makes for a really cool introduction.

“Asking for a Change” has more of a 90s sound to me. The feature of drummer Lester Estelle gives the song more of a Red Hot Chili Peppers kind of vibe. It is another catchy song, but what really stands out is Brown’s vocals. He is an accessible-sounding singer, but his voice is still unique and a good vessel for this kind of music. The music video portrays various scenarios of Brown playing different instruments outside, on a couch, and in a shower. Even with a humorous albeit entertaining music video, it does not distract from the song. Just from the first couple of listens, the song was stuck in my head!

The two singles have built intrigue as to what is next for LoopStation - another single, or perhaps an album? Whatever is next has a lot of potential as exhibited in the singles, and I look forward to hearing what Aubrey Brown the mastermind of LoopStation creates next.
