Throughout their still very recent and budding career, I have found myself expecting awesomeness from Distant Karma and their newest song is no different. “Freedom Fighter” releases on this Friday. I believe the band has summed up their intentions through an interview I conducted earlier this year:
Oscar describes the band as “an extremely energetic power with a vision to break boundaries. All of the genres we mix are very familiar, but we have made them an unfamiliar mix which we all love.”
Sameer carries on with similar thoughts: “Essentially it's a cluster explosion of passion shared and high energy again shared. We share our time and space with each other and take each other's ideas on board all the time. With three sorcerers all around this wicked cauldron of experience coming together creating new spells and utilising the old ones as a way to further to experience MAGIC.”
And this sort of philosophy is something that is carried throughout their music. It is not done in a fashion where it weaves in and out, blinking and flickering like occasional lights - no, this philosophy is often on center stage and you simply would not, could not have the music of Distant Karma without it.
This new single is similar to the debut “All I Wanna Do” but it carries more substance, so to speak, as the new song “Freedom Fighter” is filled with hope, peace, love in the same sense that so much of the all-time greats of the sixties expressed in their sound. It still has the nice “feel good” vibes that the debut ignited, and Khatima’s voice is one that catches you from the very beginning - and this is an aspect that is elevated even more on this new single.
On one side, the music of Distant Karma is the sort of music you can just ‘vibe’ to - just sounds good to the ear. But oftentimes, music carries a lesson, substance, something for you to take away from the songs and the sounds. “Freedom Fighter” has these two sides to the same coin. As far as accomplishments for the band, Khatima says:
“We want to make music you can feel, enjoy and get your soul vibrations too. With today’s music you don’t have much psychedelic soul or dub, so we are excited to come out with something fresh with a lot of feelings and excitement!”
And I believe Distant Karma is headed on the right track.
