The Selby Sound: Connor Selby's 'I Can't Let You Go'

Updated: Jan 5, 2023

Connor Selby’s debut album Made Up My Mind was an album that introduced me to Selby’s music - a place where the blues and rock are reunited in the sweetest of ways, as where one ends the other begins. Tracks off of that album that exhibit the Selby sound - a sound that puts the soul and emotion back into rock-n-roll and lets the emotion pour off the music - include ‘See It Through’, ‘Tired of Wasting My Time’, and the title track.

So, of course, the Selby sound is exhibited on his newest single ‘I Can’t Let You Go’. Released earlier this month, it is the first single off of his upcoming second album. The smooth soul is still there and remains one of the band’s greatest strengths in my ears. Sometimes you hear a bit of music and it is something in the way the music is delivered: it sounds authentic, it sounds real. And it just adds something special to the song.

‘I Can’t Let You Go’ is one of those songs. Like the tracks off the debut album, Selby is backed with a really nice rhythm section, an organ that shines through, and drums that have the perfect amount of impact and subtleness. Selby is one of those singers who just sing from the soul. It comes out in his delivery; his voice, no matter the subject matter, just convinces you that what he is singing is something that he feels, knows, and is a part of him.

Of course, no song is complete without a good, sizzling guitar solo. The track turns into a jam part way through but recoils back into that sweet blues-soul signature sound.

Simply, give it a listen if you miss the ‘soul’ era of music which can be found anywhere across the times from the blues to 70s rock-n-roll to this new single by Connor Selby. Good music from the soul to the soul.
