LP: How did the band get started? How did everyone join the band?

PD: We've all been playing in different bands for years before Phase Distorter. In 2020 live music was uncertain. Nick started writing songs during isolation. Sharing songs with friends, CoMo DIY punk/KC transplant Duncan and Midwest metal legend Jason joined. James appeared from out of nowhere and immediately fit the vibe.

LP: What are the origins behind the band name?

PD: A reference to an old video game.

LP: Who are your influences?

PD: Two of us come from punk backgrounds, and two from metal. The two vibes blend really well together. Modest Mouse, Velvet Underground, and The Garden are 3 big influences for our songwriting.

LP: Tell me about the single “City Grievance.” What is the story behind the song?

PD: It's about gentrification, but also a reflection on the passage of time. It wasn't initially about the Royals trying to put a stadium in a thriving arts district, but it kind of became about that.

LP: What was the songwriting process like?

PD: I shared a rough demo with the other members. They were really into it. We sped it up, changed it a bit, and built a massive outro that took on a life of its own (City Grievance Pt. 2).

LP: What are your plans for 2024 as a band?

PD: We have three shows left for the year. (Two Halloween shows!) After that we'll take time to record two new projects. One will be out in a couple months. The other will be out in 2025.
