The New West - Jack Browning's "Walkin' Man"

Updated: Jan 20, 2021

Jack Browning is someone who the diamond sounds of old country music flow through. His work has incorporated aspects of the American West before but never quite as clearly as on his newest single “Walkin’ Man”. Released on October 31, it has a similar aura to early Johnny Cash and the aspects exhibited on tracks like “I Walk the Line” and “Big River”. There is something special about classic country music that it is not flashy in some vain attempt to impress. Often, it is not simple but authentic because there is no pressure to impress and woo. Without this pressure, it allows for the music to breathe and be free, authentic and often better than with it. Jack Browning’s “Walkin’ Man” takes these characteristics yet does not repeat what has already been done. What you hear is new and wonderful in a few aspects: 1. It does resemble the character and charm that artists like Cash are known for 2. The song also exhibits who Browning is as an artist: someone who has previously combined aspects from both Britain and the American West in his work and will continue to grow as a musician. The song takes the charm of classic country and welcomes it back into the modern century by a musician who understands and acknowledges the diamond soul that the sounds of the past contained, something that ought to be welcomed by fans of Cash in particular but also country music fans of all ages.
