Tragic Fate released their newest single “Beast” on Halloween. The St. Joseph-based horror metal band returns after a hiatus with Brad Smith and Tim Leland as the masterminds behind the band.
Previously, the band released their debut single “The Tragedy” on November 30, 2022 and their follow-up single “Ghost” released on May 12, 2023.
LP: How did you get into music?
TIM LELAND: I've done music for as long as I can remember. I just got into metal music though about 8 years ago.
BRAD SMITH: I got into guitar and music pretty young, I heard “Iron Man” by Black Sabbath, and I was hooked on metal from there. Shortly after that I found Guns N' Roses, and seeing Slash made me want to get into guitar.
LP: How did the band start/how did everyone join?
BRAD SMITH: I decided to get some recording equipment and start making some rough demos and I showed them to Tim and he was down to get something together from the start.
TIM LELAND: Brad showed me some clips of some stuff he had been working on and it went from there! Brad and I are the two that started the whole thing.
LP: Who are your influences?
TIM LELAND: My vocal style is very much influenced by bands such as King810, Spite, and Kublai Khan TX.
BRAD SMITH: My biggest influences are definitely Ozzy Osbourne and Guns N' Roses, the guitarists for those guys really drove my writing style early on. Bands like Ice Nine Kills and Motionless In White got me interested in the horror aspect and look as well.
LP: Tell me about the newest single “Beast.” What’s the meaning behind the title?
BRAD SMITH: It represents the beast the government has become.
TIM LELAND: This song is about the government - how everything is corrupt and we as people need to stand up before it's too late. It was originally written a few years ago but is very fitting for the current political climate, and just in time for election day.
