Dom Clark Trio Single Launch Livestream with Sannie Fox

Updated: Jan 5, 2023

On Friday, Dom Clark Trio had a concert that was livestreamed on Instagram and Facebook to promote their newest single “Over Again”. Throughout the last year, I have found concert livestreams to be an awesome way to see bands’ shows that I may not be able to otherwise, due to mostly geographical factors. Dom Clark Trio has done livestreams before, and I remember watching a few last year - but the one on Friday was in particular wonderful to watch.

The band played at Dom’s studio - Mustard Seed Studios - and Sannie Fox opened. I was not familiar with her music before, but I tuned in anyway because I think it is a good way to discover more music. I missed the beginning due to not being aware of what time it was - but what I caught was awesome! Sannie’s voice was such a strong highlight for me of her set. Jack Doherty played bass, and with Sannie’s guitar and vocals, it was an entertaining set. Her Spotify description describes her music as “an evolving sonic tapestry of desert blues, soul and psychedelic rock sounds”. This more ‘stripped-down’ version of the band was still a wonderful exhibition for Sannie’s vocals. When she sings, you just feel it - the emotion that shines through and it just hits you like a spotlight. Dom Clark joined her for a song on trumpet, adding a bit of jazz-rock fusion to the mix. From the first song to the last, it was a wonderful performance, and I look forward to going through her back catalogue and hearing some of her albums.

There is a feeling that you get at concerts: it comes partly from the anticipation beforehand, and then when you get there and the band starts playing, you recognize the opening notes to a song. And it just feels great. You may sing along, you may dance, you may just stand there and let the music wash over you. It’s all part of the concert experience.

Surprisingly, this sort of aspect comes through even on a livestream concert. When Dom Clark Trio took the stage, I knew I was in for a good time. The band opened with “Old Time Bells” which was the single before their most recent release. This song is just beautiful - the lyrics are sentimental and nostalgic, and the instrumental is just lovely and captures the mood of the song strongly. The band played through a couple more of their previous tunes - which sounded so great live - and a cover of a Bobby Womack song called “Daylight” that featured an epic drum solo by drummer Enmanuel Moreno. One of the best parts of the set comes from when Dom Clark played the trumpet solo and guitar simultaneously during “The Exception” by using the hammer-on and pull-off technique on the frets. Just fascinating to watch.

Again, I think it comes from knowing the material beforehand, but there really is something special about going to a concert (or watching one in this case) and knowing the songs and just anticipating moments like “Oh, when are they going to do this song?” and “I love this song so much!” Music is such a great force of connection.

Dom Clark Trio had a few surprises up their sleeve and debuted a couple of new tracks from the upcoming album! Some of these really stood out to me, like “Metamorphosis” where bassist Conor Cotterill builds the song’s foundation with a really great groove. It was a song of proper jazz-rock fusion that Dom Clark Trio has previously dabbled in and something that the band's sound is pretty much built upon. The song “Rollercoaster” towards the end of the track was a huge stand out for me. Sannie joined the band on this song and provided vocals which sounded great with Dom’s. The set closed with a live version of the new single “Over Again”. I cannot wait to hear some more of these songs in a studio setting.

Despite being entirely virtual for me, it still captured the feelings you get when you see a good concert at a local bar or onstage. A great afternoon of jazz-rock, and I look forward to the upcoming Dom Clark album and becoming more familiar with Sannie Fox’s music, as it was a great opportunity to listen to their sets and hear some awesome music!
