Howlin May Queen "Satisfied"

Updated: Jan 5, 2023

Do you find yourself satisfied with what modern rock-n-roll music offers? Are you looking for a band who takes some of the same aspects of the 1970s and carries it in their sound?

The band you want is Howlin May Queen.

Howlin May Queen released the first single “Satisfied” off their upcoming album Tapes From The White Ballroom. I first heard the song strangely enough through some live footage of the band. At the time, the song stood out to me, but it is much nicer to hear in a studio setting as it allows for the song’s strengths to properly shine through.

“Satisfied” is an awesome hard-rocking track. It reminds me of some of the earlier tracks I have heard of the band; it seems that Howlin May Queen simply knows how to write a great rock-n-roll song that grabs your attention at once and keeps it.

At times, the song is almost ridiculously catchy. This is partly due to the great instrumental that nearly dives into funk from time to time. The catchiness is also due to the hook of “Na na na na na na na” that is for whatever reason compelling and contagious without being redundant. I am still not sure what it is about the hook that makes it so catchy, but it just is and stands out to exhibit the band’s ability to write a song that just grabs you.

There is a moment in the song, right before the ending, where it shifts into nearly psychedelic. And it is a great overlay across the hard rock. Simon Hurts’ guitar grooves across the track and sets the song into action. It allows for Daniel Ocean’s vocals to stand out, and his vocals are great! At first, you will probably be reminded of Robert Plant, but once you get to know the music of Howlin May Queen more, you will find that the band has their own unique sound.

And you will find all that and more on their upcoming album Tapes From The White Ballroom. So, if you think that you are unsatisfied with what modern rock-n-roll is often defined as, listen again. I believe that Howlin May Queen will satisfy your desires for great hard rock music and more if you only listen.
