Dead Writers is one of those bands who I have had the delight to be entranced with their music since what seems to be forever ago in 2019 when the band released their third single ‘She’s All the Animals’. Now, Dead Writers have returned; the crypt has been opened, and their hypnotic fantasy of auras and the dazzling light of emotion will overtake us all once again!
Like their previous material, I find that ‘Among Spirits’ holds an instant charge. The track does not meander; the majestic aura surrounding the track launches from the first second and does not recoil back. It gives me the same kind of emotion that the music of The Cure does; it seems almost unexplainable, but there is a sort of hypnosis that comes across in this kind of music, where not only are the lyrics dark but the music reflects the same somberness. Yet it is not full of despair; no, the emotion present is full of beauty and wonder, that happens to be a vessel for this darkness.
The song is about “the struggle of separation in personal relationships and expresses a desire for soul-searching, growth and independence”. Something that I liked even in the band’s older material is the cleverness of the lyrics.
I do have to say that I love some ‘mindless’ rock ‘n’ roll where the lyrics are nothing more than cliché and innuendo blended together. However, what makes music not only good but Good with a capitalized ‘G’ is when it has enough strength to go from music to something more than music and becomes an artform in itself.
And there is certainly an artistic aura surrounding this track. The cleverness of Dead Writers’ lyrics pulls from so many things: commonly, there are some literature references, like in their song ‘Medusa’. Even the band name comes from singer Paul Shine’s love for classic literature (where many of the authors and writers ARE dead).
‘Among Spirits’ references a lot of Christian imagery, comparing soul-searching and ends of relationships to resurrection. I love how this kind of imagery flows with the darker sounding tones of the song. Even as the darker side of the lyrics flow through the music, the atmosphere of the track glitters in dazzling hues.
Dead Writers have done it again. Coming out of the crypt in a time of silence and darkness in the world, their music has risen again. And Dead Writers have amazed me once more with a track that is not only catchy but evokes a certain kind of emotion that only certain music and art have the ability to do. Their music has certainly not lost its hypnosis; perhaps, this band is a group of magicians and sirens who do in fact dwell among spirits. I certainly would not be surprised if this was the case . . .
The band has released a music video for the track with footage of the band performing the song at Grand Chapel Studios. The music video is nice in the simplicity, that it allows for the music to shine, but I also love the ‘retro’ aspects where it reminds me of music videos I’ve seen from the 1970s.

On December 2nd, Dead Writers will perform at 02 Academy Islington supporting Bad Touch.
